DOJO ETIQUETTE
RESPECT AND DISCIPLINE IN THE DOJO
Our dojo etiquette reflects the values of respect, discipline, and commitment that are central to traditional karate training. All students are expected to uphold these standards at all times.
Respect and Discipline
Formation and Beginning of Class
- Upon being called to attention, align yourselves in a row, positioning the highest-ranking student to the right. If ranks are equal, the oldest student in the dojo takes the rightmost position. The lead student will start the class.
- Only engage in sparring as directed by the instructor, and refrain from unsupervised sparring practice with fellow students.
Focus and Engagement
Listening and Learning
- Your instructor frequently presents new techniques or concepts to the class collectively. You must maintain silence and pay close attention to the instructions.
Commitment to Training
Regular Attendance
- Regular attendance is vital for progress in martial arts. Initially, aim for a minimum of twice weekly sessions and increase to three or more times weekly. Consistency enhances flexibility, strength, speed, stamina, and discipline.
- If you must miss a class, notify the instructor or dojo captain beforehand. If unforeseen circumstances prevent prior notice, please extend your apologies as soon as possible.
Timeliness
Arriving Late
- If late arrival is unavoidable, respectfully bow upon entering the dojo and wait at its entrance, waiting for the instructor’s acknowledgment before joining the session.
Behaviour During Class
Active Participation
- Display enthusiasm and vitality during class.
- Keep conversations to a bare minimum.
- Maintain focus on the instructor, avoiding unnecessary movements or distractions.
- Uphold proper posture at all times, avoiding leaning or slouching.
